Affectionately known as The Blue Toon, Peterhead has the distinction of being the most easterly point in mainland Scotland.
By 1987 Peterhead was Europe's largest white fish port, landing nearly 120,000 tonnes at Europe's biggest fish market. The related problems of overfishing and EU quotas have since seen the number of fishing vessels based at Peterhead fall significantly and the fleet continues to face considerable difficulties today.
Peterhead offers a good choice of quality housing at reasonable cost. Boasting a spectacular bay harbour with golden sandy beaches, the town also benefits from a community centre incorporating a theatre and a swimming pool. There is an excellent choice of hotels, shops, including several supermarkets, 6 primary schools, a secondary academy, a modern health centre and a cottage hospital.
