Advocacy Project in Seaton

Langstane have been working with Advocacy Service Aberdeen for several months, helping set up a pilot project in Seaton.  Advocacy is about safeguarding individuals who are in situations where they are vulnerable, helping them to speak up for themselves and make their own decisions.

At the beginning of January 2006 Colin Garrow took up the post of Community Advocacy Co-ordinator for the project, which is based at the STAR (Seaton Taking Action for Regeneration) Community Flat in Aberdeen. The post is aimed at raising awareness of what advocacy can do and empowering people to become more involved in the decisions that affect their lives. Unfortunately, Colin currently only works 15 hours a week, but Advocacy Service Aberdeen are seeking additional funding in the hope that his hours will be increased in the future.

The project aims to work with individuals and groups, recruiting and training volunteer advocates from the local community, enabling individuals to make changes in their lives, access local services and contribute to community planning.

Colin can be contacted at the STAR flat (01224) 524209 or by email: colin@advocacy.org.uk.
