Proposed Langstane Pet Policy - We would like to hear your views

We are considering introducing a new Pet Policy to reduce the current level of problems encountered by Langstane tenants and staff alike. We have come up with two options for our proposed pet policy:

OPTION 1: One dog or cat per tenancy in properties which we consider to be suitable. Multiple numbers of smaller domestic pets such as hamsters and birds for example, may be allowed with Langstane’s permission.

OPTION 2: No dogs or cats allowed in any Langstane properties other than guide dogs or hearing dogs. As per Option 1, smaller domestic animals may be allowed with Langstane’s permission.

CURRENT SITUATION

Some housing associations do not allow their tenants to keep pets.  At Langstane, we do allow tenants to keep pets as long as certain procedures are followed. Tenants who want to keep pets must ask for permission. This request will not be unreasonably withheld. Tenants must not allow their pets to cause a nuisance or foul within the scheme.

Unfortunately, since 2005, complaints in regard to animal related matters have seen a steady increase. The range of complaints received from tenants include fouling of common areas and stairways, scheme gardens, clothes drying areas and footpaths, as well as dogs barking through the night or early in the morning.

We believe that due to these increasing problems, we must now look at new ways of controlling them. If you have any views or suggestions on the matter, we would like to hear from you.
