Tenant & Residents Group

What is a tenant group?

A tenant group is a group of voluntary members from the same area who all have a desire to tackle any on-going issues within a neighbourhood.  The group can be formal or informal and would therefore have a constitution or partnership agreement which would detail what the tenants want to achieve.

It is an opportunity to build relationships with your neighbours and with Association staff allowing for the development of a support network.

The group would meet between two and four times per year at a location close to your homes.  You would also receive on-going support from the Association as the group develops.

Alongside the meetings the group would organise activities such as neighbourhood walkabouts and staff attending those meeting will include your Housing Officer and Tenant Participation Officer.

What support can a tenant group expect from Langstane Housing Association?

What support does Langstane provide?

We will provide resources to help tenants to set up groups, including:

  • Funding
  • Staff assistance to get started
  • Help with photocopying and production of promotional material
  • Provision of venues for meetings

When a group makes suggestions or requests information we will respond in writing and in accordance with our Customer Commitment. We will let formal groups know how we have taken account of their views.

Does the group have to be registered?

Tenant groups do not have to be registered, but there are certain advantages for groups who wish to form a Registered Tenant Organisation (RTO). These include:

  • The right to be consulted over proposed changes to housing services
  • The provision of start-up and annual grants from the Association
  • The opportunity to establish networks with other RTOs

To become an RTO, tenants' group must meet certain criteria, and we will offer advice and assistance to establish a group. We will also direct tenants to independent organisations such as the Tenant Information Service (TIS) and Tenant Participation Advisory Service (TPAS) for additional advice and support.

We will maintain a register of our RTOs and make that information available at our offices and on our website, and once per year this information is reported to the Scottish Housing Regulator (SHR).
